You’ve got a handful of letters - maybe from a Scrabble rack, a Words With Friends hand, or a word puzzle - and you need to know what words you can actually make. This tool is built for that exact moment: type in your letters, set any constraints you know, and get a list of real English words in seconds. No fluff, no sign-up, just results you can use right away.
When you need a word from a jumble of letters
Maybe you’re stuck on a crossword clue, trying to unscramble an anagram, or just want to see all the possible words from a set of letters. The generator handles any letter combination, with optional wildcards for blanks or unknown letters. It’s especially handy when you’re not sure if a word exists - let the dictionary do the work.
How to narrow down results without wasting time
Start by entering your letters. If you have a blank tile or an unknown letter, use a question mark or asterisk as a wildcard. Then apply filters:
- **Word length** – set an exact length to avoid scrolling through 2-letter words when you need 7-letter ones.
- **Starts with / Ends with** – useful if you already know the first or last letter.
- **Contains / Excludes** – remove words with letters you can’t use, or force words that must include a specific letter.
Once you see the list, click any word to copy it. No extra steps.
Why you might not need to use every letter
A common question: “Do I have to use every letter I entered?” No. By default, the tool finds words that can be made from any subset of your letters. If you want only words that use all letters (like for an anagram), check the “use all letters” option. This is useful for games where you must play all tiles, but for most puzzles, partial matches give you more options.
Wildcards and blank tiles explained
If you’re playing Scrabble or Words With Friends, blank tiles are wildcards. Enter them as ? or *. The tool will treat that character as any letter. Keep in mind that using a wildcard increases the number of possible words, so combine it with length or start/end filters to keep results manageable.
When the tool returns no results
If you get zero matches, try these fixes:
- Remove one filter at a time to see what’s blocking results.
- Check if you accidentally included a letter that isn’t in your set.
- If using wildcards, make sure you’re not expecting a word that doesn’t exist in the dictionary.
Sometimes the word you’re thinking of isn’t in the standard word list - especially proper nouns or very obscure terms. The tool uses a comprehensive English dictionary, but it doesn’t include every proper name or brand.
Pattern search example
If the answer looks like ?ra?e, put that in the pattern field first, then add required letters only after the pattern returns too many candidates. Pattern first, contains second, exclude last is the fastest order.
Choose the right word tool
Use this page when you have letters or constraints and need to narrow possible words quickly. If the constraint changes, switch tools: pattern pages for fixed blanks, Wordle pages for colored clues, crossword pages for crossings, and anagram pages when every letter must be used.
Common Questions
What words can I make with these letters?
Enter your letters in the input box, then click “Solve.” The tool will show candidate English words that can be formed from those letters, grouped by length. You can also filter by word length, start/end letters, or exclude specific letters.
Do I have to use every letter?
No. By default, the tool finds words using any subset of your letters. If you need words that use all letters exactly once, enable manual all-letter check. This is useful for anagram solving or games where you must play all tiles.
Can I use wildcards or blank tiles?
Yes. Use ? or * for unknown letters or blank tiles. The tool will treat that character as a wildcard, matching any letter. Combine wildcards with length filters to keep results focused.
Can I filter by word length?
Absolutely. Set an exact word length before generating. This is one of the most useful filters when you need words of a specific size for a crossword or word game.
Can I exclude letters from results?
Yes. Use the “exclude letters” field to remove words that contain certain letters. This is helpful when you know a letter isn’t in the solution and want to narrow down possibilities.
Before you use the word list
Before you use a result, check the constraint that matters most for your puzzle: exact length, required letters, excluded letters, or whether every tile must be used. Tighten only one filter at a time so you can see which rule removed the right candidates.
